In her debut EP as "lavallee", Victoria singer-songwriter Zoey Ockenden gives us a peek into a mind unafraid to look under the stones that line the path. Since leaving her hometown of Nelson, B.C., Zoey spent a year traveling in South America to then land in Victoria to pursue a degree in Philosophy. These songs chart that journey, having been held germinating until they were recorded last summer in Montreal with the help of her brother, producer Ryan Ockenden. "above the treeline" employs Zoey's signature understated accompaniment, letting intricate lyrical work take centre stage in the vein of her early influencers, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. It is "stare-down pop" for the lovelorn and the wild. The release of "above the treeline" finds Zoey at a turning point as she prepares to begin a PhD in Philosophy at the City University of New York. Her music calls to mind the rawness of Majical Cloudz, a delicacy reminiscent of Chelsea Wolfe, and the rain-soaked weight of Grouper. Zoey adds beauty to the world through music and will continue to speak for the ones who feel deeply and cannot but experience the world with heart-crushing realness.
